Cover Guide

What is Professional Indemnity cover and why do I need it?

Recent laws have begun to place more and more legal rights and responsibilities on us all, whether as individuals or corporate bodies. Educational inspectors are often self-employed or employed through an agency who require them to hold their own insurance cover. In both cases, the liability of a law suit rests with the individual inspector. If you give wrongful advice and as a result a local authority, school or individual suffers “financially” you may be deemed personally liable for that loss. Professional Indemnity covers the cost of defending a negligent lawsuit against you and any damages awarded as a result.

What is Public Liability cover and why do I need it?

Educational inspectors are often on site at a school or Local Education Authority and therefore come into contact with children and adults whom they may inadvertently injure by accident. Cases of trips over briefcases and umbrellas in eyes are rare but should always be considered in such a busy environment. Public Liability covers you for costs you become legally liable to pay if; in the course of your business you injure someone else, or damage someone else’s property.

What is Personal Accident cover and do I need it?

According to the NASUWT*, a teacher is verbally or physically abused every 7 minutes in UK schools. A similar study in 2007** found that two thirds of teachers had been physically or verbally assaulted in the last 12 months. It is not difficult to see how Educational Inspectors and Consultants could also be targets for verbal or physical abuse. Personal Accident cover provides a sum of money if you die or are permanently injured or scarred in an accident, and includes cover if you are assaulted in connection with your work as an inspector. In addition, the policy pays a weekly amount if an accident prevents you from working. The amounts payable are

  • accidental death - £100,000;
  • serious permanent injury - all or a percentage of the limit of £100,000, based on an assessment of the degree of injury by an independent medical examiner, with set percentages payable for certain defined injuries;
  • temporary injury - 90% of Weekly Wage.
